Spanish Campaign against the abuse of children

Today I bring an amazing campaign done in Spain against the abuse of children.
The message with the contact number of Spanish line which helps children suffering abuse is only visible in a certain angle, preventing the abusers to visualize the real message behind the picture.
I think the idea is brilliant.

A ideia é brilhante.

Despite the existence of criminology graduation courses and the public in general awareness of this profession, there is not a legal recognition of criminologists in Portugal.
It is important recognize these professionals in Portugal. Therefore, here is the petition´s link where you can support this cause.

The new methodologies and protocols of forensic identification by craniofacial superimposition (MEPROCS)

Today I present you a project about Cranial Superimposition.
The importance of the a project lies in the creation of European framework, in order "to allow the application of the Cranial Superimposition technique in practical forensic identification scenarios commonly tackled by the European scientific police units".
I think that the establishment of a common methodology to European scientific police units is crucial, in several areas within forensic sciences.

This framework will include:

i) the implementation of an existing semi-automatic method to assist the forensic experts in the application of the CS technique, resulting in a simple, quick, and systematic approach;
ii) the definition of standard protocols at European level, leading to the objective application of the CS technique in different forensic identification scenarios;
iii) the specification of a forensic science methodology to provide an objective evaluation of the forensic identification results achieved by CS, avoiding particular assumptions that could bias the process.

Hence, the project clearly promotes the validation and exchange of CS protocols and methodologies among different organisations.

Event

Hello,

In October the 1ST Portuguese Congress of Criminology will take place in Vila Nova de Gaia (Portugal).
The Congress is organized by an Association constituted by recently graduates in Criminology.
The graduations in Criminology are pretty recent in Portugal, therefore the profession is not established, and not recognized by the Portuguese Government, which is pretty unfair, especially when there are 3 or more universities which graduate students in Criminology. So, if Portugal as a country does not recognize this profession how come there are so many graduations in this field?  This can raise a lot issues...which need to be discussed.
The first step to the acknowledgment of Criminology – as a discipline which can truly contribute to the society in Portugal, was the foundation of the Portuguese Association of Portugal.

“Why should we expect a part of the criminal justice system to make money?”

Another article from The Guardian about the closure of the Forensic Science Service. I put here some highlights worth to take into consideration when we speak about the closure of FSS.
The article starts with the following sentence: “Why should we expect a part of the criminal justice system to make money?”
About the future of the existent archive in the FSS:  "The chances of the many cold cases that remain being resolved would be negligible and a large and irreplaceable collection of evidence will be lost.”
The FSS was also an important centre of research: "The impacts on research and development, on the capacity of private providers to absorb the FSS's market share, on the future of the archives and on the wider impacts to the criminal justice system appear to have been hastily overlooked in favour of the financial bottom line."
And the concerns about the driving force behind the private labs, which obviously are profit driven like any other company in the world: "While individual forensic scientists may be primarily concerned with issues relating to justice, the companies that employ them are driven by commercial motives: maximisation of profit, increasing market share, brand identity etc," .

Outro artigo do jornal The Guardian sobre o encerramento do Forensic Science Service.

Just a quote

When I´ve opened up the book (Books #6) there was a quote that caught my eye. So I´ve decided to share with you.

"The field of evidence is no other than the field of knowledge" Jeremy Bentham (1827, V.I; C. I)

In "A Prova do Crime e o que se disse antes do Julgamento. Estudo sobre a Prova no Processo Penal Português, à luz do sistema Norte-Americano."

Books #6

Hello, I hope you all have a good weekend.
Today I present a portuguese book about Criminal Law and, so this will be a post more for Portugueses.
It´s  a books focusing in Portuguese Law of Evidence, and comparing the portuguese criminal system to the american one. Its author is Paulo Dá Mesquita.
